The approximately 1-mile, paved walking tour offers a fascinating look at Topsail Island’s history, including the top-secret Operation Bumblebee, a U.S. Navy project that developed guided rocket technology on Topsail Island from 1946-48. The tour also highlights other historic sites along the way.
“This is a perfect Halloween treat for families,” said Ann Tumblin, a member of the Historical Society of Topsail Island and creator of the tour. “Families can dress in Halloween costumes, if they wish — if the costumes aren’t a tripping hazard. The walking tour is approximately one hour.”
And there’s a little something extra for participants. Attendees will receive a special Halloween treat, and the Missiles and More Museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 31.
Three walking tours will depart from Missiles and More Museum at the Historic Assembly Building at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register online and select their preferred tour time.
“In 2023, during the Year of the Trail, we featured the Topsail Beach Walking Tour, and it was so well-attended that we added a second day of tours in the fall,” Tumblin said. “This year, we’re doing the walk on Halloween. It will be spooktacular!”
Registration is free. The walking tour is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. Service dogs only are permitted.
