A driving tour of Pender County African American Heritage.
The Pender County African American Heritage Trail features locations throughout Pender County that are important to our culture and history. Historians and community members are coming together to bring to life the stories, histories, and events of the Black community from the time of the Revolutionary War to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. The trail features locations, events, and people that had a great impact on the development of Pender County and in some cases the United States of America. This will be a forever-evolving project that will educate our community and visitors on the important but almost forgotten history of generations of Pender County African American residents and their ancestors.

Site of one of the first battles in the South of the Revolutionary War and the first patriot victory of the war. Throughout the park, remnants remain of the 1776 road traveled by patriot and loyalist forces. A .7-mile trail with wayside exhibits leads through the battlefield and across Moores Creek. The historic bridge site is located along the trail. The park offers a visitor center with exhibits, lighted troop movement maps and film, a .3 mile colonial forest trail, and a picnic area. The MST traverses Pender County, through the Holly Shelter Game Lands, winding through neighborhoods in Surf City and along the shoreline into Onslow County’s North Topsail Beach. Segment 14, Land of History, begins at Singletary Lake State Park in Bladen County and ends at Holly Shelter Gamelands. It features Pender County attractions like Moores Creek National Battlefield, Historic Downtown Burgaw, the Canetuck Community Center, site of one of the last standing Rosenwald Schools for African Americans and more. Segment 14 can be found at mountainstoseatrail.org/segment/14/. Segment 15 picks up in the Holly Shelter Gamelands and ends in Onslow County. This Segment features the vast ecosystems of the Holly Shelter Game Lands and showcases Topsail Island, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center and the historical towers from NASA project Bumblebee. Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Trail is a 2.2 mile loop of asphalt and concrete walking trails in and around the central portion of the town limits. The trail follows the Osgood Canal through town and offers walks through wooded areas along the canal, through urban areas in the downtown, connects to the schools located in town and offers the convenience of both passive parks and playground parks along the way. The trail is a great benefit to the health and well-being of those who take advantage of all it has to offer. There are several streets and areas throughout town that access the trail. Pender County Tourism announces a Blueberry Trail created to lead you to fresh blueberries, blueberry fields, downtown shops, eateries, history, and more. July is National Blueberry Month and Pender County is home to many blueberry farms, making us one of the largest growing locations for blueberry producers.
Pender County Tourism created a new trail that highlights fresh blueberries, points of interest to Pender County's blueberry culture, and places to shop for fantastic Blueberry merchandise, and homemade favorites. Pender County is home to everything blueberry, Annually, during the blueberry season, typically from May to July, Pender County produces millions of berries that are sold to businesses, residents, and visitors by the pints, pounds, or flats.
Pender County and the Town of Burgaw are home to the North Carolina Blueberry Festival, founded in 2003 and held annually the third weekend in June. The festival is a premier event for Pender County and the Town of Burgaw, attracting more than 50,000 visitors. In addition to celebrating our Blueberry Heritage, the festival hosts the Annual Blueberry Pancake Breakfast each February, there is the NC Blueberry Scholarship Pageant, and the Annual New Year’s Eve Blueberry Drop. Special thanks to all Town of Burgaw downtown merchants, The North Carolina Blueberry Festival, Pender County Public Library, and the Pender Historical Society for helping put this together.
