in Historic Downtown Burgaw

Pender County is hosting the third annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival on Saturday, June 24th 2006 in historic downtown Burgaw, North Carolina. We had so much fun the first two years, that we are excited to have it again this year.

The Blueberry Festival celebrates the historical, economic, and cultural significance of blueberries in the southeastern region of our state. The first cultivated blueberry production in North Carolina began in the Pender County area in the 1930s. Currently, Pender County ranks second in blueberry production for the state.

The Star News, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will be hosting the 3rd Annual NC Blueberry Festival Recipe Contest. The contest will be held Friday, June 23, (the day before the festival) at the Agriculture Building, 801 South Walker Street in Burgaw. The competition is sponsored by The Star News with cash prizes being awarded in each of six categories.

Featuring the NC Blueberry is what the Blueberry Festival is all about, and what better way to do that than in a delicious blueberry dish. Recipes for the contest may include your favorite pie, or jam, jelly, cakes, salad and more. You're invited to enter your blueberry dish for the food display and judging.
